Welcome to Films in Conversation!  A film, upon its release, is immedately put within the timeline of cinematic history and comes into conversation and comparison with films of the past. Movies often repeat similar story structures, genre tropes, and character arcs, but a successful film repeats these beats with a variation that adds a new perspective.  By placing contemporary films in conversation with films spanning back to the start of cinema, we can understand how Hollywood has evolved and where it is headed. While many filmmakers are unable to have conversations with the film legends who inspired them, through their movies, they have the opportunity to both emulate and respond to their inspirations.

As part of this monthly blog, I will choose two films, one contemporary and one classic, to compare and put in conversation with each other. I will analyze genre, technical developments, thematic perspectives, and much more, as we delve into how these two films interact with each other. Through this blog, I hope to share our passion (and obsession) with cinema and introduce younger audiences to the vast history of film.
